getting around
There's so much to see in New Orleans beyond the French Quarter! Here's how to get around the city.
transportation options
On Foot
Our favorite way! While traveling from one neighborhood to another requires transportation, the neighborhoods themselves are very walkable. We recommend spending a day in each area, and walking within that area to nearby attractions.(This is why our guidebook is organized by neighborhood.)
Streetcar
Adorable and cheap, you have to take at least one ride. Perfect if you're not in a hurry.
See logistics at the bottom of the page.
Rideshares
Rideshares like Uber and Lyft are abundant and relatively affordable. Great for getting from one area to another. Make sure to double check the license plate in populated areas (some opportunists take advantage of tourists who mistakenly get in their car).
Bike
Bearing in mind that New Orleans streets can be riddled with potholes and highly congested in touristy areas, bike-savvy travelers may opt to rent a Blue Bike. Good bike routes include Esplanade Ave between the FQ and City Park, or the Greenway in Midcity.
Car Rental
You don't need a car for a brief trip to Nola, but if you want to get outside of the city it's a good option. We don't recommend driving to or staying in the French Quarter or CBD if you go this route (driving/parking is difficult there).
Tour Company Transportation
If you are planning to get outside the city (such as a swamp tour in Jean Lafitte or a visit to Whitney Plantation), you can book through a tour company that will take take of transportation and tickets. Some offer more than one stop.
taking the streetcar
To take the streetcar, download the Le Pass app. Input your card information and you can book tickets in the app. Wait until you are getting on the car to activate your ticket on the app. (You can also pay cash when getting on but it must be direct change.)
Ticket Types:
One-Way Ticket: $1.25
Jazzy Pass: $3+ for 24+ hours of unlimited rides on streetcars and ferries. (If taking at least 3 rides in a day, or taking the streetcar and ferry, this is the better option.)
Street Car Lines:
Green Line: Runs between the French Quarter and Uptown, down the scenic St. Charles and Carrollton Avenues. This car will take you to Audubon Park.
Red Line: Runs between Midcity and the French Quarter, down Canal Street. This car will take you to City Park.
NOTE: Streetcars go the same direction as car traffic.
